A Man Alive by Thao and the Get Down Stay Down

By Bdog

Fourth album by Thao Nguyen, which is produced by co-collaborator and friend Merrill Gaubus of tUnE-yArDs. “A Man Alive” is the first release I’ve ever heard by Thao and the Get Down Stay Down and it is a pleasant surprise. Like tUnE-yArDs, it is both eccentric and rhythmic bringing to mind cutting edge, girl punk groups like the Slits and the Raincoats as well as left of center mid nineties girl bands Cibo Matto and the Breeders. Nguyen’s approach is feminist, in your face, and an absolute blast.
