When choosing a beach resort, at least in the US, typically an air of compromise prevails. Either you want a hotel right on the beach, and give up a certain level of luxury for location. Or you insist on a highly rated resort, which then turns out to have limited or somewhat removed access to the sand.
If a modern sustainable-style stay is more your mood–or a luxury resort without all the frou-frou–Solage Calistoga is worthy of consideration. Off the quiet Silverado Trail, Solage’s bungalows resemble austere bat and board pioneer cabins. But inside, theDowling Kimm design is starkly modern, from the stainless ceiling fan and glass front stove heater to the distressed concrete floors, the bathroom hidden behind the bed but open (the toilet is private), with a sunken tub and river rock floored shower, original artwork, coffeemaker with locally sourced grounds from Calistoga Roastery (which is particularly good), minibar, flatscreen, dvd player and ipod dock and stark white sumptuous beds with meltaway pillows. Floor to ceiling picture windows facing the bed open wide to a simple patio with thatched twig roof. Nature and modernity in harmony.
Picture Hell freezing over. At least that’s what I was doing as I stood in the Beethoven ballroom of the Encore resort in Las Vegas, listening to Steve Wynn speak. Chairman of the Wynn resorts, Las Vegas visionary, gaming resort legend, Wynn is known for building one opulent, luxury-laden, escapist resort after another. First Mirage transformed Las Vegas, then Bellagio did it again, then Wynn proved Vegas could sustain a Five Star resort.
I define Barcelona in two words: Pork & Seafood. I love the food, the people, the art, the music, the wine and I especially love getting lost in the Gothic Quarter to discover another Antoni Gaudi masterpiece around the corner.
When I travel, I try to stay next to the food markets. I hit the jackpot when I found a one bedroom apartment with kitchen next to La Boqueria on La Rambla. more
