2011 was indeed a very exciting year for music. Anything goes! Music boundaries were pushed to another level. How could they make THAT sound? Crazy stuff happened. Rap-Bluegrass-Electronic…What? Women sound like men and men sound like women. Punk is back! So are the 80s and Goth. Rap has soul again. And teenage boys have a fresh, new set of albums to set the mood when they are trying to perfect the one-handed bra snap.

The King Is Dead
The Decemberists
Alternative Country
The Decemberists continue to prove they are far more than well-read indie-popsters from Portland. After 2009’s Hazards of Love, the quintet steps out of prog rock’s dense forest and lands on an expansive pasture where accordions, harmonicas and banjos run free. As R.E.M.’s Peter Buck lends some of his 12-string guitar prowess and Gillian Welch adds lightness to standout single “Down By the Water,” the folk lilt lifts Colin Meloy’s melancholic cries to twangy croons. Though the foot-stompin’ melodies fit him well, his usual cutting wordplay has softened some in the sun of this bucolic setting. [Rhapsody]
Once every few years or so an album comes along and we say, “WTF?” For good or for bad, this album sounds nothing like the rest. We hate it or we love it. I love Tune-Yards, Who Kill! Play it at your next party. Ema, PAST LIFE MARTYRED SAINTS is such a strong album. Listen, listen and then listen again. Tell Bdog what you think of his top 5 picks this month on his Facebook page.

Classic Rock fans might find a reason to buy a new album this decade. Fleet Foxes takes me back to old Crosby stills Nash and Young albums; Yuck brings the heavy guitar of Crazy Horse. Cults is actually upbeat and James Blake will twist every note into something a little trippy and beautiful. But my pick of the month is “Circuital” by My Morning Jacket. Think Grateful Dead, Phish and a little Steely Dan.
I grew up listening to classic rock like Neil Young, Bob Dylan and then later got into modern rock like The Church, New Order and eventually electronic bands like Massive Attack, Air and Radiohead. If you want to hear a new twist on this bands, I recommend Bdog’s picks. I especially like TV on the Radio’s new album. It’s the perfect album to play when you’re hanging out with a few friends. Enjoy!
Bdog has something for everyone this month. Adele is one of those breakout artist that’s #1 on all of the charts, on every talk show and the cover of every magazine and I’m struggling not to like her. This girl has soul! Her new album is definitely worth a listen. If you love old Smashing Pumpkins and upbeat indie rock, definitely pick up “Belong”. My favorite new find out of the bunch is Lykke Li, Wounded Rhymes. Her vocals are warm, music is cold and sound is quite eerie. Enjoy!

2010 has definitely been a great year in new music. So many new bands are inspired by music from the past. You’ll hear bluesy Led Zeppelin & Jimmy Hendrix guitar rifts, eclectic sounds of David Bowie & Iggy Pop and feel-good 80s bands like Men At Work or Flock Of Seagulls. The Black Keys, The Nationals, Yeasayers, Caribou, The Drums, Vampire Weekend and LCD Soundsystem top my list for 2010. Enjoy TGB Music Guru Bdog’s Top 20 Albums of 2010.
