If a modern sustainable-style stay is more your mood–or a luxury resort without all the frou-frou–Solage Calistoga is worthy of consideration.
Off the quiet Silverado Trail, Solage’s bungalows resemble austere bat and board pioneer cabins. But inside, theDowling Kimm design is starkly modern, from the stainless ceiling fan and glass front stove heater to the distressed concrete floors, the bathroom hidden behind the bed but open (the toilet is private), with a sunken tub and river rock floored shower, original artwork, coffeemaker with locally sourced grounds from Calistoga Roastery (which is particularly good), minibar, flatscreen, dvd player and ipod dock and stark white sumptuous beds with meltaway pillows. Floor to ceiling picture windows facing the bed open wide to a simple patio with thatched twig roof. Nature and modernity in harmony.
Those who love wine will be impressed that Solage is nestled between the vineyards of Fisher and Clos Pegasse, now part of the recently established Calistoga AVA. Other winery tasting rooms, such as Frank Family and Dutch Henry (both recommended) are nearby.
Set at the Northern end of Napa valley, Calistoga has been known for its hot springs for over 150 years, long pre-dating the Napa wine industry. Historic downtown Calistoga is not far from Solage, a short bike ride away.
