Got a group or family outing to organize? Have I got the destination for you: La Costa Resort, in Carlsbad, north of San Diego.
You have probably heard the name for years. La Costa is one of the oldest modern destination resorts in Southern California. But this sprawling property—yes, it’s the opposite of today’s trendy boutique hotels, for sure—truly has something for just about everyone. There are 17 hard and clay tennis courts (hosting the Mercury Insurance Open this summer). There are 18 holes of golf, under redesign as we speak, which tee off right behind the resort’s lobby building. There is excellent dining by a team led by Austrian Chef Hans Wiegand.
Then there is The Chopra Center for Well-Being—the only one in the world, founded by Dr. Deepak Chopra himself, with Dr. David Simon. This internationally-known center for healing mind, body, and spirit, hosts a number of tailored workshops throughout the year, as well as offering ayurvedic massage, meditations, individual consultations and complimentary yoga classes.
A perfect complement to the Chopra center is the 43,00 square foot Spa at La Costa (renowned even before its recent expansion), so beautiful and relaxing you wont want to leave. Couples treatments are a specialty here, as well as rain aromatherapy, bamboo, lomi, and hot stone massages.
And there is a waterpark, open gaming room, and Kidtopia kids club so fun, the young ones may forget about driving you crazy to go to Legoland (which is 3 1/2 miles away).
And all with just over 600 guest accommodations (that’s not small, but relatively tiny compared to a typical Las Vegas hotel). Recently remodeled rooms here are pleasant, with traditional American décor, big flatscreen TVs, comfortable beds, semiprivate patios and spacious bathrooms.

Still, it’s clear the common areas are what makes La Costa special. You’ll find a more-than-adequate fitness center, a Yamaguchi salon, live entertainment in the courtyard five nights a week, and an inviting boutique and gourmet store/gift shop as well. Pool cabanas are popular during the weekends, making for a very convivial spirit. A small group could easily plan a tailored experience here and not feel at all encumbered by any other guests, while a couple or family could just as easily avoid them.
Many resorts claim to have something for every visitor. I think La Costa has come as close as I’ve seen to actually meeting that mission.
